Waiting
for your device to get the latest version of Android - with few
exceptions - can be exasperating. You must first cross your fingers so
that the manufacturer decides to update it, then wait for the update to
be ready and, finally, for it to be extended to your region and
operator. If you know that your device already has a new version but you
are tired of hitting for updates and being told that you already have
the latest version of the system, there is still something you can do:
update the firmware yourself. This, of course, as long as your terminal
is not tied to a specific network (that is, it is free)
1- Find and download the firmware
There
are several web pages that automatically collect the firmware published
by Samsung on its servers, such as Sam mobile. These firmware are
official, without any type of modification and therefore once installed
will continue to appear as official firmware, without root and other
stories. It's like getting it through Kies.
The
database is huge and includes every Samsung device model ever and to
be. Now, you need to make sure of the exact model of your device so as
not to end up downloading firmware for a similar model. For example, a
Galaxy S8 is distributed in more than 20 different models. If you have
good eyesight, the easiest way to check is to read the tiny print on the
back of the phone.
The same information is
available in the system, in Settings - About device, in the Model number
section. It is important that you check the exact model, as the
difference between one and the other can be as subtle as an additional
letter or zero.
2- How to Flash And Install Firmware
Do
not worry too much about the countries, since if your mobile is free,
technically you should be able to install the firmware of any country.
Now, you should consider that each country may have a slightly different
system configuration, including the number of languages available in
the system (you could always use this trick to use another one), the
pre-installed applications and regional versions of Samsung Pay that
they would not go in your country.
The
pre-installed applications can be very different from region to region,
and they are totally different from China than from Russia. For all
this, it is recommended that you choose and download the firmware
closest to you: if you are in Spain, firmware's from other European
countries will suit you better than for example the Vietnamese version,
which could do without Spanish.
Once you have
selected it, download it to your PC. It will take a while, as today's
firmware takes about 2 GB of space and Sam mobile allows you to download
at a reduced speed unless you pay (registration can be free, you don't
need to pay).
2. Unzip it into a folder
Firmware
is downloaded in ZIP files that you must open and unzip somewhere on
your hard drive. The specific folder does not matter, since you can
later find its location wherever it is.
3. Download and open ODIN
The
main tool to update your Samsung from Windows that we will use is ODIN.
You can download Odin 3.12.17 from here. Unzip it somewhere on your PC
and then open Odin.exe, or open it directly from the ZIP, as you prefer.
3- Restart the mobile in Download mode
You
have everything ready. Although updating Android should be painless, it
never hurts to make backup copies and manually check if there is
something on the device that we are especially afraid of losing. If so,
better put it in a safe place before, and you never know.
When
everything is safe, turn off the phone and then turn it on in download
mode. To achieve this, most Samsung devices, if not all, require you to
turn on the mobile while pressing the Home button, the power button and
the volume down button.
When you do this, a
warning is shown on the screen indicating how bad it is to modify the
operating system and the problems it can cause you. You must press the
button to increase the volume to show that you are satisfied and decide
to continue.
At this moment, a screen that says Downloading will appear on your device, and it will wait for orders.
4- Connect the cable to the PC
Connect
your device to your PC using a reliable USB cable. There are a lot of
bad cables out there, and you wouldn't want them to be disconnected in
the middle leaving your phone freaking out. It is also important that
you have a sufficient amount of battery, such as more than half.
5- Upload firmware
In
Odin, one of the squares under ID: COM should light up blue indicating
that it detects the connected mobile or tablet. If so, press the AP
button to choose the firmware that you unzipped somewhere on your hard
drive.
6- After complete flash
The
process will take a couple of minutes, and then the device will reboot
automatically, since we had left the Auto Reboot option checked. The
first time you start a new version of Android it takes a long time, so
be patient.
If we are talking about Marshmallow
and not Nougat, there will be an additional process of "optimizing"
applications once the system has started. This process can easily be ten
minutes, depending on how many applications you have installed.
